This family tree started as a diagram from my aunt Nanette. It is now an interactive D3 visualization — with every name changed, to protect everyone's privacy.
The couple in the middle are my great-grandparents. Each ring out from them is one generation, and each person sits at the angle their branch of the family occupies, held there by two forces: one pushing them away from their cousins so nobody overlaps, one pulling them towards their parent. Drag anyone around their ring to see it.
Play the timeline to watch the family grow: people appear on their birth year, next to the relatives already there. Switch the radius to birth years and the rings become a calendar instead — the decade each person was born on.
